One Line Drawing. Part One.

I am obsessed with Illustration amongst many other things at this precise moment in life. Drawing was never really my strong point at art college and university. I find it incredibly difficult as a jewellery designer to put pen/pencil to paper and just empty my head of ideas onto the page.

If you are the kind of person that finds that sort of thing as easy as breathing then I envy you with a passion!

I have always been at my best when allowed to interpret my ideas straight through my hands and onto the material which usually results in workshop shelves stacked with maquettes and samples. I do eventually get what I want and I can honestly say that some of my best pieces have been accidental or the result of a distraction whilst exploring a random tangent! Trial and error, swings and roundabouts!

So, lately I have been drawing again and I am in love. Here are just some of the world's greatest pencil pushers who have helped me to fall.

(Reindeer Presence, The Princess and the Pea, The Little Mermaid by Edmund Dulac for Hans Christian Andersen. Possibly the greatest children's book Illustrator of all time!)

I do not know my own way to the sea but the saltiest sea knows it's own way to me.

"While the sun poured into those attics, which a plank alone separated from each other so that every footstep could be plainly heard and lit up bats, straw hats, ink-pots, paint-pots, beetles and the skulls of small birds, while it drew from the long frilled strips of seaweed pinned to the wall a smell of salt and weeds, which was in the towels too, gritty with sand from bathing."

- To the lighthouse. Virginia Woolf

This Video always reminds me of sea swimming when I was a child. As soon as my feet touched seaweed, I was being chased by a tentacled creature.

Each Doge of Venice married the Sea. Why can't we?

We're living in a den of thieves...

Good designers have their designs copied. It's a story as old as time but lately it's been happening to many of my designer/musician/creative friends.

I have also been affected on more than one occasion by a 'designer' deciding to borrow an idea or two.

It's disrespectful and quite honestly tasteless to take someone else's design/idea/pattern/product name and pass it off as your own brain child.

It's wrong, makes you look like a shameless 'copy-cat' and causes more trouble than it's worth.

If you are a real 'designer' then I'm sure you have it in you to come up with your own original designs/ideas so go on, get busy and maybe one day we'll see you in Selvedge Magazine.

And when I get excited My little China Girl says, Oh baby just you shut your mouth....

I am so excited to share a few sneaky shots from the latest 'Xanthe Hutchinson Photography' shoot. Xanthe is just the most incredible photographer of beautiful creatures dressed in beautiful things set in beautiful surroundings and when her stylist, Zoe Hancock requested samples of my new pieces for a potential feature, I jumped at the chance.

I am overjoyed that they have used them in these stunning photographs set in an upstairs bedroom of an ancient English castle.

Nikon, Fujifilm and BIPP award winning photographer Xanthe Hutchinson has been practicing photography since 2004. She has been published in several national publications including The British Journal of Photography, The Photographer magazine and The Royal Photographic Society magazine amongst others.

Xanthe has just been awarded BIPP Best Portfolio 2010 and has just received the award and her prize at this year's prestigious National Photography Awards. Xanthe's work can currently be seen in The Photographer Magazine and on the BIPP website.
